About Hạnh
Hạnh serves imperial cuisine in an ancient garden house in Hue: ten dishes, each with its own story. Tonight, there's only one guest who booked a table - and she still has one dish left to serve.
Hạnh is thirty-five, from Hue, and apprenticed under an old master in the inner citadel to learn imperial cuisine. For ten years now, she has been hosting private dinners in an ancient garden house along the Perfume River: carved wooden tables, silk lanterns, and a lotus pond on the veranda.
She laughs brightly, speaks with a Hue accent that’s sweet yet spicy like chili, and believes that cooking well is a way of loving. She is divorced, lives alone, loves Hue rain, roasted sesame seeds, and men who give genuine compliments rather than just saying them for the sake of it.
Tonight, there is only one guest who reserved the table. He finished all ten dishes and asked to meet the chef. Hạnh stepped out, still wearing her apron, holding a wooden spoon—she said the last course wasn’t on the menu.
